Missing fingers on SD card

This weekend I took part in the ARCI  Welcome to QRP contest it's only a 3 hour contest from 11:00 am to 2:00pm (local time). I decided to take this contest to the park as it sure does help with the bonus points that are offered for going portable. I took my camera along to snap some shots. Most of us who blog do have a camera of some kind to add the flavor of pictures to the blog post. My camera is a Nikon D60 and has been giving me some trouble,  now then it would not recognize the SD memory card and failed to take a picture.
Just like a sore tooth that gets better just before the dentist visit....the camera would work just fine at the camera store. Today the camera worked great and when I go home I wanted to email a contacts I had that turned into a very nice QSO.

Seam problem

Seemed the SD card knew I was in a hurry and wanted  pictures to add to an email. The computer told me it could not recognize the memory card. The card was then put back in the Nikon D60 but now it too would not recognize the card either. GREAT here we go again I thought but after close examination I found the card to have some damaged fingers at the far right!!! I went on the internet and downloaded some programs that claimed they could recover pictures from damaged SD cards. I didn't have any luck with these programs other than them taking up space on my hard drive. I still was getting a

message to place the SD card into the reader so photos could be recovered. Well the card was in the reader and it was not looking good at all. I then had a closer look at the card there was not only fingers missing but the card was separating at it's seam. I tried  taping the seam as the card may be separating when entering the card reader and not allowing the contacts of the card to come in contact with the reader. After a few attempts it worked and I just copied the photos to my external hard drive. Now the SD card is in the garbage, I also had a very close look at the other SD cards for damage. All the cards were in good shape but lesson learned.....take a close look at the SD cards as I believe this was the problem with the camera from the get go as it is the only card I was using.

This evening I wanted to get on the  radio to catch some DXCC's for my Diamond ARRL award. The bands were not to full of the DX  that was needed for my DXCC award BUT St.Pierre et Miquelon
is a self-governing territorial overseas collectivity of France and is just outside of Canada, some Canadian hams were there making contacts on 20m!!! It was a DXCC I did not have and it's more or less local....easy peasy.............so I thought. The pileup was huge and I never did make the contact. Later in the evening they were on 40m but I was not able to hear them at all. It seemed I was the only one not able to hear them by the size of the pileup. Oh but earlier China BY5WJ was on the cluster and I thought "what the heck " and holy cow there were LOUD AND CLEAR....I gave them a go but again the pile up was big but I wanted to stick with it as they were just blasting in. While others were making contact I went to QRZ.COM to get some info as I always do...........this is what I found........

 Oh and I already have Jamaica' well it was good I found out before calling "BY5WJ" for 30 or more minutes. Lesson learned be careful even of the DX cluster spots. As a side note this is a mistake I or anyone could make and it's nice Josh put the info up on QRZ.COM to clear the fog.

Outdoor temperature reading

We had the hottest day on record today at mid day it climbed to 39C or 102F. When you factored in the humidity it was a nice hot and sticky 47C or 117F.

Julie's relatives are over from England for a few weeks and to start off the holidays on June 16th it was off to Hamilton Air show loaded with vintage aircraft. It was a nice sunny day with a temperature around 27C.

 The air show lasted 6 hours which included a nice lunch also table and chairs down by the runway....so we were close to the action. The air show hosted the Avro Lancaster this plane is only one of two that are still flying today the other one is in England.  Also the B-29 Super-fortress and this one at the air show being the

Corsair,  P40, Spitfire, Mustang, Sabre

 only air worthy B-29 in the world. Some other vintage plans were the B-24 Liberator, Avenger torpedo bomber, FM-2 Wildcat, Corsair, Spitfire, Curtiss P-40,  F-86 Sabre just to name a few!! It was great to see the Lancaster for the first time as it was the bomber my dad flew in during WWII as a tail-gunner. Two hours before the show began we purchased a ramp pass which allowed us to get up close and personal with most of the aircraft in the show. The Lancaster came with a

wireless operator. The transmitter/receiver used was the R1155 and T1154.  As for the B-29 they had a multi radio setup check this link out for info and great pictures of the B-29's radio op's rigs.  Now an air show would not be an air show wit the the JETS!!! Becuase this was a vintage aircraft show 99% of the aircraft were WWI and WWII. BUT there is always an exception to the rule and the exception this year was the CF-18 fast, loud and proud!! This past week a very interesting question was posed, one I had not really thought about but now has got me thinking. Paul PC4T asked the question " Are more and more radio amateurs are using social media such as Twitter and Facebook"  Paul had checked the stats on his blog traffic and it was down....due to what, was the question?? I will be the first to admit I am really not up on the social media scene at all. I do have a Face-book page and Twitter account but I really don't understand them or use them all that often.  Here is my question to the bloggers out there....

Fellow blogger's I  always like to comment on blogs and give my two cents worth about a topic....BUT.....is it just me or are these darn Captcha's getting harder and harder to decipher !! I understand about security and that our comments are to come from humans and not other computers. Having said that it seems to me that some of these Captcha's one needs divine glasses to figure out the letters. At times I fool myself thinking if I look at it long enough the letters will jump out from the blurred combinations.....!  There have been "events" of me trying up to 3 (or more)combinations to get the correct letters. To add insult to injury it wasn't bad enough bending my brain around one word now most Captcha's are two words!!
