Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Aug 03 0354 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 July – 02 August 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. Three spotted regions populated the disk at various times during the summary period. Region 2767 (S21, L=200, class/area Hsx/120 on 26 Jul) maintained an H-type configuration through the period and was quiet and stable. Region 2768 (N26, L=111, class/area Hsx/020 on 30 Jul) formed on the disk on 28 Jul and decayed to plage by 02 Aug. It was quiet and stable. Region 2769 (N26, L=059, class/area Axx/010 on 02 Aug) quietly rotated onto the disk.

An eruptive prominence was observed off the SE limb about midday on 31 Jul. A slow-moving CME was subsequently observed, but was determined to not have an Earth-directed component. No other CMEs or activity of note was observed during the summary period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels through the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels through midday on 02 Aug when unsettled activity was observed due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Solar wind observations indicated nominal conditions through about 02/0600 UTC when a CIR, in advance of a positive polalarity CH HSS, became evident in the data. Wind speeds increased from about 310 km/s to near 530 km/s, total field increased to 12 nT and the Bz component reached -10 nT. The geomagnetic field reacted with mostly unsettled conditions.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 August – 29 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels through 03 Aug with a chance for G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on 04 Aug as HSS effects persist. Unsettled levels are expected once again on 29 Aug. Quiet levels are expected to prevail for the remainder of the period, 05-28 Aug.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Jul 27 0132 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 – 26 July 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. New Region 2767 (S21, L=200, class/area Hsx/120 on 26 Jul) rotated onto the disk on 21 Jul, but was quiet and stable. A slow-moving, partial halo CME was detected in coronagraph imagery in the NE quadrantat at about 19/1135 UTC. Subsequent model analysis indicated an Earth-directed component would likely become geoeffective on 24-25 Jul. No other CME activity was detected during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels 20-23 Jul. Field conditions reached unsettled to active levels on 24-25 Jul due to effects from the 19 Jul CME. A return to quiet conditions was observed on 26 Jul. Solar wind parameters reflected enhanced conditions on 24-25 Jul as a result of CME effects. Solar wind speeds increased from approximately 300 km/s to near 415 km/s. Total field peaked at 11 nT while the Bz component dropped south to -10 nT. Density levels increased to 28 particles/cc. Ambient solar wind parameters were present on 20-23 Jul and 26 Jul.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 July – 22 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels thoughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be quiet to unsettled on 28-29 Jul due to a negative polarity CH HSS. Quiet conditions are expected to prevail throughout the rest of the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 – 19 July 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. No active regions with sunspots were observed over the past week. The passage of a slow-moving CME from 08 Jul was observed on 13-14 Jul. Near the end of the period, a faint, slow-moving CME was observed off the western limb in STEREO-A imagery beginning at around 19/0524 UTC. Analysis of this event remains underway at the time of this writing.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal-to-moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels between 13/0000-0900 UTC due to a combination of positive polarity CH HSS and CME (08 Jul) effects. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 13 Jul. Quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 July – 15 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be normal-to-moderate throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be quiet to unsettled on 23-24 Jul and 31 Jul-01 Aug. Quiet conditions are expected to prevail throughout the rest of the period.

2020 Colorado 14er Event

August 1 & 2, 2020
Saturday and Sunday

Amateur Radio operators from around Colorado will be climbing many of Colorado’s 14,000-foot mountains and Summits On The Air (SOTA) peaks to set up amateur radio stations in an effort to communicate with other radio amateurs across the state and around the world. Join in on the fun during the 29th annual event and see how many of the mountaintop stations you can contact. The covers the entire weekend but many mountaintop activators will hit the trail early with the goal of being off the summits by noon due to lightning safety concerns.

The event includes all Summits On the Air (SOTA) summits, which adds over 1800 potential summits! If you aren’t up to climbing a 14er, there are many other summits to choose from with a wide range of difficulty. See the Colorado SOTA web page at w0c-sota.org

Radio operators who plan to activate a summit should post their intent on the ham14er group via the ham14er groups.io website. Also, be sure to check out the event information at http://www.ham14er.org

Frequencies used during the event
Activity can occur on any amateur band including HF and VHF. The 2m fm band plan uses a “primary frequency and move up” approach. The 2m fm primary frequency is 147.42 MHz. At the beginning of the event, operators should try calling on 147.42 MHz. As activity increases on that frequency, move on up the band using the 30 kHz steps. Don’t just hang out on 147.42 MHz…move up! The next standard simplex frequency up from 147.42 MHz is 147.45 MHz, followed by 147.48 and 147.51 MHz.

Warning: Climbing mountains is inherently a dangerous activity.
Do not attempt this without proper training, equipment and preparation.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Jul 13 0246 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 – 12 July 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the summary period. Region 2766 (N05, L=122, class/area Bxo/010 on 10 Jul) was the only spotted region and decayed to plage by 11 Jul.

A filament eruption near S29W18 produced a faint, slow-moving CME signature in LASCO/SOHO C2 imagery beginning at 09/0724 UTC. Analysis and modeling of the event suggested a possible glancing blow from the CME around 14 Jul.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the summary period.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet. No significant periods of southward Bz were observed.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 July – 08 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low over the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to continue at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to active levels. Unsettled conditions are likely on 13 Jul and 31 Jul – 01 Aug in response to coronal hole influence. Active conditions are likely on 14 Jul due to the anticipated arrival of a slow-moving transient that left the Sun on 09 Jul. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels under a nominal solar wind environment.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Jul 06 0150 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 29 June – 05 July 2020

Solar activity was very low. Region 2766 (N06 L=117, class/area Bxo/beta on 04 Jul) was the only active region on the visible disk. The region was in decay at the end of the reporting period.

Other activity included a DFS, approximately 18 degrees in length, which erupted in the SE quadrant beginning around 05/0630 UTC. Subsequent SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery showed the related CME signature after 05/1412 UTC. Analysis for an Earth-directed component is ongoing.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal background to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to unsettled. Unsettled levels were observed on 01 Jul due to sustained southward Bz and on 04-05 Jul in response to a positive polarity CH HSS. The remainder of the summary period was at quiet levels under nominal solar wind conditions.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 July – 01 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be normal background to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels. A recurrent positive polarity CH HSS is expected to cause isolated unsettled levels on 06 Jul and again on 31 Jul – 01 Aug. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels. Analysis and modeling of the 5 Jul CME is not complete and the presence of an Earth-directed component is possible.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 15 – 21 June 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the reporting period. Region 2765 (S24, L=116, class/area Cao/beta on 05 Jun) was quiet and stable as it rotated around the W limb on 15 Jun.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at background levels throughout the reporting period.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet under a mostly nominal solar wind environment.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 22 June – 18 July 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to unsettled. Unsettled levels are likely on 04 Jul in response to a SSBC and again on 06-07 Jul due to influence from coronal hole influence. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to persist at quiet levels.
