Complete Version: On How NCIS Maligned the Amateur Radio Service
9 November 2017 | by Some of you wanted to see the complete version, uncut, of this video in which I discuss the differences between CB and the Amateur Radio Service. This is in response to the recent episode in which the NCIS writers missed a great opportunity to discover the vibrant reality of the current amateur radio service in the United States of America.
The previous version of the video was prematurely cut short by just over three minutes. This version includes that ending. I also remove some of the low-end rumblings from the vehicle. This version should sound a little bit less annoying. Hopefully, the quality of the video is sharper, as well. This version was edited by Adobe Premiere CC 2017.

I agree with what the Last Man Standing producer said concerning this NCIS episode. The obvious errors (CB style handles, calling CQ on two meters and neglecting to plug a microphone in, etc.) didn’t bother me as much as this: It made us look like malcontents. Who would want to be a ham when they see what the typical ham looks and acts like (according to the NCIS profiler). Honestly I wasn’t surprised. We hams may be a diverse group, but I am sure much of the “entertainment industry” thinks of us as conservative, white, and old. Three strikes and we are a suitable target for their writers to make fun of, ridicule and disparage.
And I thought your microphone sounded great. Road noise was not a problem and I had no trouble listening to your voice. 73.
Don: I sure appreciate your responses. I’m glad I found a workable microphone and can now make more videos while I make my one-hour commute each morning, and then another hour each evening. This will make some use of those two hours.
I think it is relevant that we use these opportunities to promote a positive view of our service and hobby. This video isn’t primarily aimed at those of us in the know. There are many who are not knowledgeable about the modernity and service of amateur radio, let alone anything specific. Hopefully, this vlog entry encourages some interested soul in looking further into the hobby. Some hams may skip out after minute one, but others may find it reinforcing to reflect on what the modernity of our radio service.
Who knows, maybe when you share this with non-hams, it might inspire them to look a little deeper into the hobby and thereafter become one of the amateur radio operators, too.

I totally agree, I like this show and can get over the other false science but this was crazy. You would think that is a show like Last Man Standing can do it right and actually get the lead actor a real license, CBS could do this for NCIS and get someone on board to consult….Our ham club sent a note to our ARRL section manager about our displeasure. Other ham’s please do this, make some noise and maybe the ARRL can step up on this.

There is a petition on Change.org to tell CBS to air a special about what amateur radio accomplished in Puerto Rico. This is in response to the way in which they horribly misrepresented amateur radio in the recent episode of NCIS.
