2019 Colorado 14er Event
August 3 & 4, 2019
Saturday and Sunday

Amateur Radio operators from around Colorado will be climbing many of Colorado’s 14,000-foot mountains and Summits On The Air (SOTA) peaks to set up amateur radio stations in an effort to communicate with other radio amateurs across the state and around the world. Join in on the fun during the 28th annual event and see how many of the mountaintop stations you can contact. The covers the entire weekend but many mountaintop activators will hit the trail early with the goal of being off the summits by noon due to lightning safety concerns.
The event includes all Summits On the Air (SOTA) summits, which adds over 1700 potential summits! If you aren’t up to climbing a 14er, there are many other summits to choose from with a wide range of difficulty. See the Colorado SOTA web page at w0c-sota.org
Radio operators who plan to activate a summit should post their intent on the ham14er group via the ham14er groups.io website. Also, be sure to check out the event information at http://www.ham14er.org
Frequencies used during the event
Activity can occur on any amateur band including HF and VHF. The 2m fm band plan uses a “primary frequency and move up” approach. The 2m fm primary frequency is 147.42 MHz. At the beginning of the event, operators should try calling on 147.42 MHz. As activity increases on that frequency, move on up the band using the 30 kHz steps. Don’t just hang out on 147.42 MHz…move up! The next standard simplex frequency up from 147.42 MHz is 147.45 MHz, followed by 147.48 and 147.51 MHz.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 01 – 07 July 2019
Solar activity was at very low levels throughout the reporting period. Region 2744 (S27, Lo=207 class/area=Bxo/20 on 07 Jul) only produced several low-level B-class events and appears to have a reverse polarity magnetic configuration.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal background levels.
Geomagnetic field activity transitioned from unsettled early on 01 Jul to quiet for the remainder of the reporting period. A weak enhancement in the solar wind on 01 Jul was obscured by intermittent mag data from L1.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 08 July – 03 August 2019
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach moderate levels from 11-14 Jul due to influence from a positive polarity CH HSS. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at normal background levels.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to active. Active levels are expected from 09-11 Jul in response to influence from an anticipated positive polarity CH HSS. Unsettled levels are likely on 28 Jul due to a SSBC. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels under a nominal solar wind regime.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 – 30 June 2019
Solar activity was at very low levels. Regions 2742 (N04, L=092, class/area Axx/010 on 24 Jun) and 2743 (N03, L=111. class/area Axx/010 on 24 Jun) were quiet and stable. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available imagery.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels.
Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels with an isolated unsettled period observed early on 30 Jun. Solar wind parameters were at mostly nominal levels throughout the period. A peak wind speed of 418 km/s was observed at 26/1805 UTC. Bt and Bz parameters were at mostly nominal levels.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 01 July – 27 July 2019
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to isolated moderate levels throughout the period.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach isolated unsettled levels on 06 Jul and 10-11 Jul due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Mostly quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2019 Jun 24 0133 UTC.
Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 – 23 June 2019
Solar activity was at very low levels. No sunspots were observed on the visible disk. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available imagery.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate levels on 17 Jun with a peak flux of 109 pfu observed at 17/2025 UTC. Normal levels were observed on 18-23 Jun.
Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels with an isolated unsettled period observed for 0600-0900 UTC period on 20 June. Solar wind parameters were at mostly nominal levels through the period. A peak wind speed of near 425 km/s was observed early on 22 Jun. Bt and Bz parameters were at mostly nominal levels.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 24 June – 20 July 2019
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be moderate to high levels on 25 Jun – 03 Jul in response to elevated wind speeds associated with recurrent CH HSS activity. Normal levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach unsettled to isolated active levels on 24-26 Jun, 06 Jul and 10-11 Jul due to negative polarity CH HSS influence. Quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 – 16 June 2019
Solar activity was at very low levels. No sunspots were observed on the visible disk and there was an absence of significant flare activity. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available imagery.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels throughout the reporting period.
Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels on 13 June, and unsettled levels on 14 June due to recurrent CH HSS influence. Quiet conditions were observed during the remainder of the period.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 June – 13 July 2019
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 26-30 June, with moderate levels expected on 18-25 June and 01-03 July in response to elevated wind speeds associated with recurrent CH HSS activity.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 17-19, 25 June, unsettled levels on 20-22, 24, 26 June and 06, 10-11, 13 July due to CH HSS influence. Quiet conditions are expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2019 Jun 10 0314 UTC.
Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 – 09 June 2019
Solar activity was at very low levels. No sunspots were observed on the visible disk and there was an absence of significant flare activity. A dissapearing solar filament (DSF), centered near S05E52, was observed in GONG optical imagery at 03/0715 UTC but was not observed in LASCO imagery. This CME was believed to have impacted Earth midday on 08 June. An additional DSF, centered near S05E13, was observed at 07/2145 UTC and is expected to have a possible geoeffective component with an anticipated arrival of 12 June.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels on 03 June and moderate levels on 04-08 June in response to elevated wind speeds from a negative polarity, coronal hole high-speed stream (CH HSS). The peak electron flux during the reporting period was 2,270 pfu at 03/1755 UTC.
Geomagnetic field activity reached G1 (Minor) storm levels on 08 June and unsettled levels on 09 June as a result of the aforementioned 03 June CME. Quiet conditons were observed throughout the remainder of the period.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 June – 06 July 2019
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 11-13 and 26-30 June, with moderate levels expected on 10, 14-20, 25 June and 01-03 July in response to elevated wind speeds associated with recurrent CH HSS activity.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to reach active levels on 12 and 25 June, unsettled levels on 10-11, 13, 24, 26 June and 06 July due to CH HSS influence. Quiet conditions are expected throughout the remainder of the outlook period.

Weekly Propagation Summary – 2019 Jun 03 16:10 UTC
Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2019 Jun 03 0154 UTC.
Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 May – 02 June 2019
Solar activity was at very low levels. No sunspots were observed on the visible disk. The strongest flare of the period reached B2 at 01/1454 UTC and was from around the E. limb. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.
No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal levels on 27-28 May, moderate levels on 29 May and moderate to high levels on 31 May – 02 Jun. The increase in electron flux was due to increased solar wind speeds from a negative polarity CH HSS.
Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. A weak, slow-moving transient was observed on 27 May, resulting in quiet to unsettled conditions. Total magnetic field strength reached a peak of 12 nT and no significant periods of southward Bz were observed. Solar wind speeds for the transient were between 320-380 km/s. Late on 28 May, an increase in solar winds to between 500-550 km/s was observed, producing unsettled conditions through 29 May, with an isolated period of active during the 29/0300-0600 synoptic period. The geomagnetic field returned to quiet levels after 30/0300 UTC as effects from the negative polarity CH HSS slowly waned. Quiet conditions were observed for the remainder of the reporting period.
Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 June – 29 June 2019
Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the reporting period.
No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to range from normal to high levels. High levels are expected on 03-06 Jun, 09-10 Jun and 26-29 Jun; moderate levels are expected on 07-08 Jun, 11-22 Jun and on 25 Jun. Normal levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period. All increases in electron flux are anticipated due to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs.
Geomagnetic field activity is expected to remain below G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels. Active conditions are likely on 25 Jun; unsettled conditions are likely on 03-05 Jun, 08-09 Jun, 23-24 Jun and 26 Jun. Elevated levels of geomagnetic activity are anticipated due to multiple, recurrent CH HSSs. Quiet conditions are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.
