Malware at TWiT’s Ham Nation?

I tried to visit the Bob Heil’s Ham Nation show homepage on the TWiT.tv site today and received this error:

Hopefully they’ll be able to get this resolved soon.  Ham Nation is a great show and provides needed exposure to ham radio to quite a large tech audience.

UPDATE:

From Graham Cluley at Sophos:

The website run by internet celebrity Leo Laporte, TWiT.tv, has been hit by a malware infection intended to infect visiting computers.

Hackers have managed to inject a line of malicious code, in the form of an iFrame, at the very top of the TWiT website pointing to a webpage with a .cz.cc domain name.

    This is newsworthy?

  • Jerry Taylor - KD0BIK:

    Hi Matt,

    Thanks for posting this.

James, it certainly is newsworthy if it helps prevent someone from getting the malware.

I saw a Google+ comment from Leo that the issues have been resolved over at the TWiT site.

Yes, since its targeting ham radio operators.

Here’s an article from back in 2009 about how the NY Times had a similar Malware infection. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/09/nyt-revamps-online-ad-sales-after-malware-scam

What happens is the malware IFRAME is put in the ad at the top of the page. The “bad guys” buy ads through a network, then insert malware into the ads. I used to work for a large web site and had the maware scammers. Here’s a blog post I wrote about it. http://kremer.com/advertising-malware

Hi, You can load the iTunes program on PC’s or Apple computers. You will find the current and back podcasts of all 17 Ham Nation programs by launching iTunes and searching the podcasts for Ham Nation . The episodes play on the computer from the iTunes application. It is easy to hit the iTunes “subscribe” button and not miss a show. The weekly program is posted in the iTunes podcast directory within a day of the Tuesday, 9pm EDT weekly TWIT.TV show. (-5 UTC). I then view or review the programs on the iPhone or the PC. I don’t know if the Android downloads an iTunes app. Anyone else know? All podcasts can be downloaded free, unlike music and movies. Enjoy. I love this show, too. Pam in NJ, USA

This was NOT related to ham radio or any subject, Charles (W8KWA). It was in internal thing that Google
caused for a few hours today. All is well in Petaluma, Ca. TWIT was never off the air or harmed.

HAM Nation continues to grow its audience and have had over 100 get their license, upgrade or just get back on the air after the start of the program on Leo Laporte’s network.

That’s fantastic, Bob! You’ve got a great show and a great platform to spread the word about our hobby and an opportunity to bring a whole new tech-savvy group.

  • Ron AA2RR:

Bob Heil is correct in his ‘growing’ of ham radio.

I saw the TWiT Special Event webcast of Bob’s NAB 2011 Ham Party where he announced the HamNation program. I was so excited that I dusted off my old in-active Tech Plus ticket, bought Gordon West’s study books and upgraded to General and then Amateur Extra. In addition, I qualified as a VE to help Bob give back to the ham community. And more important for me….got back on the air!

I’m now a faithful viewer of each weeks webcast and have helped to spread the word about the show.

Now there is a Post Show Net (on 40m and 20m) for hams to log into and discuss the show.

Bob, Gordo, and now Leo and the rest of the ‘cast’ are leading ambassadors for ham radio.

    Thanks and well done guys!
