too bad that through the generations, the various interpreters of that text confused the meaning of the word “men” with “white”, “male”, etc.
Sorry to say, WW6L, but “white male” is almost certainly what they meant. Remember that racism and sexism were pretty much entirely unquestioned at the time (note that these same people didn’t allow blacks or women to directly participate in instituting the new government). The authors were not saints, but fallible men of their time. That’s not to discredit them, rather the opposite: they had conflicts and fears about the future as do you and I, but they put those aside and stood up against the injustices of the day, and felt compelled to question the dogma their rulers used to assert their power. Their ability to step past their own faults and stand up for what’s right should be an immeasurable inspiration for those of us who want to do the same in our own generation.
