Spin the Random Topic Wheel

  • Intro to picking a 1st timers Distro

This Weekend in Hedonism

  • Cheryl’s Recipe Corner
    • Spring Chicken Salad
    • Description:
      • This is an item served in one of our local coffee shops (I know the owner, so she gave me the recipe… which I have since tweaked to my preferences). It’s great as a brunch item or a light meal on hot summer days. And can be whipped up super quick if you’ve got some rotisserie chicken on hand - and you can get the carrots and green onions already prepped at most grocery stores (I do 99.9% of my grocery shopping at Walmart)!
    • Ingredients
      • 1 cooked chicken breast (boneless/skinless or that has been deboned) OR rotisserie chicken that has been deboned, chopped and shredded into bite sized pieces
      • 1/2 cup Mayo (+/- to taste)
      • 1/2 cup Raspberry Vinaigrette (+/- to taste)
      • 1/2 cup THINLY sliced Celery
      • 1/2 cup Julienned Carrots, cut into small pieces
      • 1/2 cup chopped Walnuts OR Pecans
      • 1/2 cup finely sliced green onion (optional)
      • 1/2 cup halved seedless red Grapes
      • Loaf of Baguette Bread (optional)
    • Directions
      • Mix chicken, mayo, vinaigrette, celery, carrots, nuts and green onion together. Cut the grapes in half and store in a separate container and mix in with a portion of chicken salad immediately before eating (if you don’t keep them separate, the grapes will make the chicken salad very liquidy).
      • If using baguette bread, cut a 6" piece off of the loaf (works best with end pieces; if you can find the “mini baguette loaves” that are 8-10" long, just cut them in half) and carefully hollow the bread out (leaving enough of a bread barrier between the chicken salad and the crust that the bread doesn’t fall apart). Lightly toast, if desired (I definitely prefer them warm and lightly crunchy). Stuff the bread with the chicken salad and enjoy with extra grapes, chips, etc.
    • Notes:
      • At the coffee shop where this recipe originated, the Baguette bread is hollowed out and stuffed with the chicken salad, making it a unique “sandwich” presentation (they call it the “Spring Chicken Stuffer”). If you don’t want to mess with that, it’s also great served on sandwich bread, a hamburger roll or even all by itself.
      • I personally prefer Ott’s brand Raspberry Vinaigrette, which is manufactured 20 minutes from our house - Kraft is my second choice.
      • This mixture will be store fine in the fridge for about 1 week (BUT, the longer it is stored, the more it will dry out as everything will absorb the mayo and dressing - just stir a little more mayo and dressing in). I personally put a few spoons of chicken salad in a separate bowl, a spoon of mayo and a squirt of raspberry vinaigrette and a spoon full of grape halves and stir well, that way the grapes are well incorporated.
      • While this is yummy immediately after making it, after it has a few days to meld with the other flavors, it is amazing.
      • When making this a meal, it pairs well with a piece of quiche
      • Feel free to tweak this however you see fit! Add some spices (salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, dill weed, parsley)! As I typed this, I thought that Bacon Bits would probably be really good with it. Let me know how you made it your own creation!
  • Cheryl’s Mixed Drink Corner
    • Peach Bellini
    • Description:
      • I’m an equal opportunity girl, when it comes to alcohol, for the most part (although, I’m still trying to learn to love Gin). And you’ll find me enjoying a “girly drink” like the one I’m sharing today, and a finger of Scotch tomorrow. This is a great brunch beverage, too.
    • Ingredients
      • 1 lb. fresh or frozen sliced peaches, plus more for serving
      • 1/4 cup fresh or frozen strawberries, plus more for serving
      • 1/2 cup peach schnapps
      • 1 bottle prosecco or sparkling white wine
    • Directions
      • Add the peaches, strawberries, and peach schnapps to the pitcher of a blender. Cover tightly with the lid, and blend at high speed until smooth.
      • Divide the peach mixture among 6 glasses. Garnish each glass with more peaches or strawberries, if you like. Fill each glass half full with prosecco; stir, and add more prosecco, if you like.
  • Russ’s Drink Corner (now hijacked by Cheryl - and probably occasionally by Bill!)
    • Elijah Craig Small Batch
    • This bottle is from the C918 batch, meaning it was their 3rd release for the year, bottled in September of 2018
    • Description
      • Elijah Craig was a baptist preacher who created the process for “true Kentucky bourbon.” - and he’s credited with the process of putting his distillate into charred oak barrels. Citing a surge in popularity and supply not meeting demand, in early 2016 Heaven Hill Distillery removed Elijah Craig’s age statement and began blending younger stock into its non-age stated (NAS) small batches
    • Details
      • Mashbill: 78% corn, 10% rye, 12% malted barley
      • Region: Bardstown, KY
      • Proof: 131.4 (65.7% ABV)
      • Color: Copper
      • Nose: Brown Sugar, with well toasted pie crust and cloves.
      • Taste: Vanilla and Oak, followed by the sweetness of corn syrup from a pecan pie - and a tiny hint of cherry and a touch of honeysuckle.
      • Finish: Extremely heavy baking spices; the rye makes it spicy. But the lingering end was heavy clove and extreme sweetness - a mix between caramel and that pecan pie corn syrup taste
      • Price: $200+ (750ml) - VERY limited in availability.
      • Rating: 89
  • Bill’s Whatever Corner
    • Item: Numb Numb Juice Hazy IPA from Fall River Brewing in California
    • Numb Numb Juice Hazy IPA is a tropical juice bomb that shifts to an almost candy like finish on both the nose and palate. While being served in a coconut with a little umbrella seems fitting, the can it’s in will have to do. It’s so nom nom, that it might leave you numb numb. So drink responsibly. Cheers!

Amateur Radio Topics:

  • FCC Warns Pittsburgh Amateur Radio Operator for 911 Interference
    • The Federal Communications Commission has sent a notice of licensed operation and harmful interference to an amateur radio operator in Pittsburgh regarding transmissions on a 911 emergency services channel from a handheld transceiver. Last summer, the FCC received a complaint from Allegheny County, Pa., Emergency Services concerning interference with one of its UHF “T-Band” emergency communications channels. The interference affected the county’s west EMS dispatch channel on 470.4375 MHz. After the agents notified Kundston of the issue, he produced a Baofeng BTech UV-Pro handheld radio.

Open Source / Linux Topics:

  • Ubuntu 26.04 Beta is now available to download
    • The beta release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS “Resolute Raccoon” is now available for download, arriving a month ahead of the planned stable release on April 23, 2026.  This version runs on the latest Linux kernel 7.0 release candidate and features the new GNOME 50 desktop environment along with a new default system monitoring utility called Resources.
    • Visual updates include colorful new folder icons, a fully opaque Ubuntu Dock, a new default wallpaper, and a refreshed boot spinner animation.  The release also introduces OpenJDK 25 as the default Java runtime, updated Mesa 26.0.2, and includes AI packages like AMD ROCm and NVIDIA CUDA.
    • Key Info:
      • Availability: ISOs are available for Intel/AMD 64-bit, generic ARM, and Raspberry Pi, with beta flavors like Lubuntu, Xubuntu, and Kubuntu also released.
      • Stability Warning: The beta is not officially supported yet; users should back up data and test in a virtual machine as beta software may break file managers or require driver tweaks.
      • Known Issues: The Software & Updates utility is not preinstalled, and some flavors like Ubuntu MATE and Ubuntu Kylin may not have beta images available yet.
      • Upgrade Path: Installing updates on a beta version will automatically upgrade the system to the final stable release when it launches.

    • CVE-2026-3888 - Local privilege escalation in snapd on Linux allows local attackers to get root privilege by re-creating snap’s private /tmp directory when systemd-tmpfiles is configured to automatically clean up this directory. This issue affects Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 18.04 LTS, 20.04 LTS, 22.04 LTS, and 24.04 LTS.

  • YOLO Linux
    • YOLO Linux is a modern Linux distribution designed from first principles to prioritize user outcomes over system management, featuring a conversational AI agent that replaces the traditional command line. Instead of requiring users to memorize commands or configure complex settings, YOLO Linux allows them to describe their intent in plain language (e.g., “Install the browser” or “Connect to the VPN”), and the AI agent automatically handles the installation, configuration, and security. Built on a standard Linux 6.12 kernel, it maintains a zero-shell security posture by eliminating direct user access to the terminal, thereby reducing the attack surface while ensuring all operations are logged, auditable, and explainable. This approach aims to make Linux accessible to everyone by removing the learning curve associated with traditional operating system administration.

LHS Episode #609: The Weekender CXXXVII

Show Notes

Spin the Random Topic Wheel (Segment 1)

  • “Your Dream Car”

This Weekend in Hedonism (Segment 2)

Cheryl’s Recipe Corner

  • Honey Balsamic Glazed Ham

  • Description:

    • Russ was never a fan of baked ham, until he moved here and tried my mom’s (which I’ve shared that recipe before in the past; it was an orange juice and brown sugar mixture). While we hadn’t gotten the chance to try this recipe yet, he was excited to try it (because what is better with ham that a lot of tasty mustard?). This is in my menu rotation for Easter.
  • Ingredients

    • 1/2 fully cooked bone-in ham (about 7 lb. total; preferably shank end)
    • 2 tsp. black peppercorns
    • 1/2 cup honey
    • 1/2 cup whole-grain mustard
    • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
    • 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
  • Directions

    • Heat oven to 375°F. Place ham, cut side down, on rack set in roasting pan; add 1/4 cup water to pan. Score ham on all sides in diamond pattern, cutting only 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Cover ham and pan tightly with foil and bake 11/2 hours.
    • Meanwhile, using heavy pan, crush peppercorns; place in bowl. Add honey, mustards, and vinegar and whisk to combine. Transfer 1/2 cup glaze to small bowl and reserve for serving.
    • Brush one-third of glaze (about 1/3 cup) over ham and bake, uncovered, 15 minutes; rotate ham in oven and repeat with another 1/3 cup glaze and bake another 15 minutes. Brush remaining 1/3 cup glaze over ham and bake until ham is heated through and internal temperature registers 140°F, 15 to 20 minutes more. Slice and serve with remaining glaze.

Cheryl’s Mixed Drink Corner

  • White Sangria

  • Description:

    • I have always been a huge fan of fruity drinks, and I am a huge fan of white wine… so what could be better for your Easter related meal?
  • Ingredients

    • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup Applejack
    • 1/2 medium green apple, cored and diced
    • 1 medium orange, halved
    • 1 lime, thinly sliced
    • 1 mango or nectarine, pitted and sliced
    • 1 cup hulled and sliced strawberries
    • 2 (750-mL) bottles dry white wine, chilled
    • 1 (750-mL) bottle prosecco, chilled, to serve
    • Fresh mint or basil sprigs, to garnish
  • Directions

  • In a microwave-safe glass measuring cup, combine the sugar with ⅓ cup water. Microwave until the sugar is dissolved, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir well, then let cool completely.

  • In a large pitcher, combine the Applejack and apple. Let sit for 10 minutes until the flavors incorporate.

  • Squeeze half of the orange into the pitcher. Cut the remaining half of the orange into thin slices. Add the orange slices, lime, mango or nectarine, and strawberries; stir to combine. Pour the white wine over the fruit and stir to combine. Add 2 tablespoons of the simple syrup and taste for sweetness. Add more simple syrup, 1 tablespoon at a time, if desired.

  • Serve the sangria over ice, topped with a splash of chilled prosecco, if you like. Garnish with fresh mint or basil sprigs.

Russ’s Drink Corner

  • (I will occasionally pick something from Russ’s collection to mention… but I didn’t have time tonight)

Bill’s Whatever Corner

  • Charlie Russel Irish Style Red Ale - Harvest Moon Brewing - Belt, Montana
    • 5.5% ABV 20 IBU
    • Because the water in Belt is almost identical to the classic Burton water in England, we have brewed a beer very similar to an ale from that region. Two row pale ale malt combined with hops of a soft, flowery character but not overly aromatic or bitter, combine for an ale to be enjoyed year round. This ale is red in color and has malt character like an amber ale but with the hoppiness of a pale ale.

  • Indiana prohibits HOAs from restricting amateur radio antennas

    • HB 1152 was just signed into law and prohibits HOAs from adopting or enforcing any rule that restricts amateur radio equipment including antennas, towers, and feedlines.
    • According to Hunter Reed KD9YLQ, the ham who wrote the amendment for State Senator Alexander, “the bill would require that once an HOA updates its governing documents, then they have to comply with the law.” There’s nothing in the law that would require an HOA to change or not enforce their existing rules unless the rules were adopted or amended after June 30, 2026.
    • Relevant section of the bill to follow:
      • SECTION 6. IC32-25.5-3.4 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE AS A NEW CHAPTER TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2026]:
        • Chapter 3.4. Homeowners Association Regulation of Amateur Radio Antennas
          • Sec. 1. As used in this chapter, “amateur radio antenna” means an antenna, support structure, tower, feed line, or related equipment used by an amateur station as defined by 47 CFR 97.3.
          • Sec. 2. As used in this chapter, “governing documents” has the meaning set forth in IC 32-25.5-2-3.
          • Sec. 3. This chapter applies only to a homeowners association’s adoption or amendment of governing documents after June 30, 2026.

  • Carl Richell, CEO System 76, Responds To Age Verification

    • System76 CEO Carl Richell has issued a strong critique of new U.S. state laws requiring operating systems to implement age verification, particularly California’s Assembly Bill 1043 and Colorado’s Senate Bill 26-051. While acknowledging the legal obligation to comply, Richell argues these laws are ineffective and threaten user privacy and digital freedom. He highlights New York’s proposed bill as being more dangerous.
      • “New York’s proposed Senate Bill S8102A requires adults to prove they’re adults to use a computer, exercise bike, smart watch, or car if the device is internet enabled with app ecosystems. The bill explicitly forbids self-reporting and leaves the allowed methods to regulations written by the Attorney General. Practical methods for a bill of such extreme breadth would require, in many instances, providing private information to a third-party just to use a computer at all.”
      • “The challenges we face are neither technical nor legal. The only solution is to educate our children about life with digital abundance. Throwing them into the deep end when they’re 16 or 18 is too late. It’s a wonderful and weird world. Yes, there are dark corners. There always will be. We have to teach our children what to do when they encounter them and we have to trust them.”
    • Despite concerns, System76 plans to implement a minimal, privacy-preserving age prompt to comply with the law, while continuing to advocate for its repeal or constitutional challenge.

      • The podman quadlet install command can now install files which contain multiple separate Quadlet files. The files must be separated with a — delimeter on a new line, and each section must begin with a # FileName= line to name the new Quadlet (#27384).
      • The podman update command now features a new option, –ulimit, to update container ulimits (#26381).
      • The podman exec command now features a new option, –no-session, which disables tracking of the exec session to improve performance and startup time (#26588).
    • Changes
      • Podman will now automatically attempt to migrate legacy BoltDB databases to SQLite when the system reboots. This is necessary as support for BoltDB will be removed in Podman 6.0 in May. If automatic migration is not possible, a new option, podman system migrate –migrate-db, will manually force a migration.
      • The podman secret create - command no longer requires that the secret be provided through a pipe, and instead allows typing the secret through the terminal (#27879).
    • Bugfixes
      • Fixed a bug where healthchecks would sometimes fail to execute due to systemd rate limits.
    • API

    • Gentoo now has a presence on Codeberg, and contributions can be submitted for the Gentoo repository mirror at https://codeberg.org/gentoo/gentoo as an alternative to GitHub. Eventually also other git repositories will become available under the Codeberg Gentoo organization. This is part of the gradual mirror migration away from GitHub, as already mentioned in the 2025 end-of-year review. Codeberg is a site based on Forgejo, maintained by a dedicated non-profit organization, and located in Berlin, Germany. Thanks to everyone who has helped make this move possible! LHS Episode #607: Fastest Digital Mode Ever

Show Notes

Introduction

  • ARDC Community Meeting - I attended this on Saturday
  • IC-7100 Setup - FT8-a-thon
  • Cheryl stared at a powered off radio for 5 minutes, trying to work up the nerve to turn it on. Didn’t happen. 😂

Amateur Radio Topics

  • MFJ Documentary On The Horizon

    • Martin F. Jue: Life and Legacy: A documentary about MFJ Enterprises, ingenuity, legacy, and community.
    • Martin F. Jue (K5FLU) founded MFJ Enterprises and helped shape modern amateur radio. This documentary explores his life, his work, and the people who built MFJ alongside him: preserving a uniquely American story of ingenuity, labor, and community.
    • The project appears to still be seeking funding and has a trailer released already.

  • The Fastest Digital Mode Ever Created?

    • FT2 is a revolutionary digital mode for amateur radio, developed by IU8LMC with the support of ARI Caserta. It uses the same codec as FT8 and FT4 (77-bit payload, LDPC 174/91, GFSK modulation) but compresses the transmission cycle to just 3.8 seconds. Software required for this is currently: Decodium v3.0 FT2 “Raptor”. It is an optimized weak-signal FT2 client with enhanced sensitivity, extended frequency range, and real-time NTP/DT feedback. Based on WSJT-X 3.0.0 RC1 — focused exclusively on FT2 mode. License: GPL v3 (Windows, macOS, Linux)

          • Sec. 4. A homeowners association may not adopt or enforce a regulation, rule, or other policy that has the effect of prohibiting a person from maintaining an amateur radio antenna on a property that the person owns, rents, or leases.

Open Source / Linux

  • Podman 5.8.0 Released

    • Podman (the POD MANager) is a tool for managing containers and images, volumes mounted into those containers, and pods made from groups of containers. Podman runs containers on Linux, but can also be used on Mac and Windows systems using a Podman-managed virtual machine. Podman is based on libpod, a library for container lifecycle management that is also contained in this repository. The libpod library provides APIs for managing containers, pods, container images, and volumes. Podman releases a new major or minor release 4 times a year, during the second week of February, May, August, and November. Patch releases are more frequent and may occur at any time to get bugfixes out to users.
    • Features
      • The podman quadlet install command can now install files which contain multiple separate Quadlet files. The files must be separated with a — delimeter on a new line, and each section must begin with a # FileName= line to name the new Quadlet (#27384).
