The creator Eric Guth 4Z1UG of QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo comments on my last post.

I wanted to repost Eric’s comment here as I find that those who read the blog sometimes do not go through and read the comments. I felt it important to let my blog readers read his comment he posted. He mentions Ron who in a comment identified as knowing Eric and who is a blind ham.
Below is Eric’s response:
I appreciate all of the messages above, even the angry one. Nobody feels as bad as me about what happened. All of this I explained in the messages that I have already sent out. I have re-learned my lessons.
Ron is a true friend. Like I did last August, I am building a presentation listing with links to the videos for blind hams. It will be up hopefully by Friday. They will find it easily with a screen reader on the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo website home page: qsotodayhamexpo.com
The Expo will be in on-demand mode with all of the videos until April 16th, then I will put a link to my Vimeo library, so you can watch them forever, even on your Roku box.
Go to qsotoday.vfairs.com to enter the Expo. Just need your email address, no fancy ticket number.
Finally, if you don’t need that $10.00 back, I can sure use it to bring the next Expo in August. This operation is expensive to build and host. I love making it and hope to attend it myself, rather than staying in the kitchen, next time.

There were some other comments about the content of the Expo, infomercials and content of the Expo presentations. Below was Eric’s response to this:
There are over 80 presentations, 20% of them given by Sponsors. Most were the hard work of individuals who put them up. Sponsorship revenue was helpful to start us out, ticket sales pay for the cost of all of the people and services it takes to make the expo. I hope that you will come back today to enjoy the presentations that are hardly infomercials, but the amazing work of our fellow hams.

He can keep the $10 but it was the hyper-paranoid login fiasco that doomed this. They were so worried someone might get to participate without paying that many who did pay like me had to spend hours trying to get on the system. Once I finally managed to log on I was so fed up with it by then I just said to heck with it. Their failure meant many that worked hard to do presentations, booths, etc wasted a lot of effort. I promoted this to my local ham club and signed up as soon as it was announced. Never again.
Good evening Richard, and thanks for sharing, yes I too will admit the login was a huge issue for me. I feel if they had kept it to just your call and email to log in things for many people would have gone much smoother. Maybe Eric will see this too and the August log in will be improved and user-friendly.

Well, yes, disappointing that it didn’t quite work out as intended. It was a hugely complex operation involving many different parties coming together on the day – some highly professional & others not so. But, we now have a large depository of materials which will add value to our hobby [yes, it is a hobby!!]. For me, living in the UK, it was $10 of good value for what I did get around to seeing [ 2 pints of warm beer……]! I would never have been able to travel to such a live event in the USA and as a social event, it has proven the worth of putting on such a show again in the future for those who can not travel big distances for all of the usual reasons. I have attended other similar events hosted here in the UK this year and really enjoyed the content.
I am hopeful, this ‘channel’ to market will be sustained in the future and all power to the elbow of people, such as Eric, to spend their time and energy pulling it all together. i am sure the next one will be better and I look forward to paying my few bucks to join in.

Good afternoon Jim, thanks for taking the time to read the post and leave a comment. Yes this is a huge undertaking and there will always be those who sit back in the reclining chair and give negative advice. It has always been like this and if everyone listened and stopped then so much for lots of things we enjoy today such as electricity, automobile and airplane flight just to mention a few things.
Let’s continue to support Eric and those like him who venture into new ground.

I’m not passing along any advice, but I can tell you FOR SURE that when you pay for something and it isn’t delivered (even if it is only $10) the right thing to do is to refund the purchase. In my case, and I’m sure in hundreds of others, I spent hours of my time trying to access the event. Finally, gave up and requested a refund. Never happened.
Good evening Dave, I don’t know what to tell you and I did get the impression that Eric was going to refund the money. Why not try to email him directly to get some info on how to get a refund? You can find his email on QRZ.COM.
