RIP David Collingham, SK – K3LP is now SK.
My condolences to the family and friends, and to our radio community, for the tragic loss of David Collingham, K3LP.
I am sad and sorry for his loved ones and friends who now grieve this loss.
May his memory echo through the ether like radio waves, reaching the receivers of our hearts.

Dear Friends of David Collingham-K3LP:
I have learned additional information concerning his death.
Last night, during a heavy winter storm, David let his dog outside. David later took his truck to search his 25-acre property when his dog did not return. David found that his dog had fallen into an icy pond that adjoins his property with another property.
David made the heroic decision to go into the pond to try and save his dog.
After some time had passed, David’s wife Rebecca went looking for him. She found his truck at the pond and called 911. Fire personal recovered David’s body as well as his dog. Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
David lived his life bold, courageous and heroically and he died trying to save his beloved dog. He will always be a hero in our hearts.
RIP David R. Collingham, age 59.

Sorry to hear, I wish his family and friends strength. R.I.P. David.
David will be missed by all. We are all very sad to lose him.
I can’t help but think that David died just as he lived. He was a great guy always helping others and doing good things. It was a terrible accident. David died trying to rescue his lost dog which fell through thin ice in a nearby pond.

David kept giving until the end. His life’s endeavor should be a beacon for our life’s work. Giving is the greatest joy in our lives because of the joy it brings others. As Schiller, echoed by Beethoven, said: All men are brothers. A true commentary on how David viewed others and his legacy of accomplishments are testimony to that end

All thoughts with daves family the ham community couldnt ask for anyone better involving himself in all the dxpeditions he attended including the adventure to sandwich and georgia islands will be sadly missed by us all.All thoughts and prayers go out to daves family.

I knew Dave back in the 1990’s when he was building his house in Mt. Airy, MD. Along with N3OC, W3ZZ, myself and others, we operated M2 from W3GNQ in those days. Being a long time dog owner and currently have two hurricane Katrina rescues, the details of how it happened have me unnerved today. Truly a great guy who did more for the hobby than I will ever do. PVRC member and a good friend who I had lost contact with over the past years. I just gave both dogs a big hug today, they almost seemed to know what had happened. It was a privilege knowing you Dave.

David was a classmate of mine growing up in Fontana, CA and we became friends on social media a couple years ago. David was a very kind and gentle man. My prayers are with his family and all whoever knew this very kind soul. R.I.P David
So sad to hear about this. My heartfelt condolences to David’s family. As a lifelong dog lover I totally understand why David took the action he did. Never having children of our own our dogs have been same as children to my wife and I and we would do for them anything we would have done for human children.
RIP David. May your legacy continue to serve as you have served.
David was a true friend and great local radio buddy. One of my most memorable QSOs was during a local ragchew with David one afternoon. (My station is no big gun station with 100 watts and my 4 element tribander at 20ft.) While David, I and another local club member were chatting I heard a station breaking so I asked everyone to stand by and acknowledged the station breaking who to my surprise was Pai – VU2PAI via long path!!! David was shocked not only that I could hear Pai but worked him LP.
Another memory with David was during the East Coast DX Convention he saw that I was alone and asked me to join him at the bar. That night was another memorable event…..when we sat at the bar David introduced me to Krassy K1LZ. The stories and knowledge shared by the both of them was priceless.
David you will be missed….thank you for making a little gun like me feel welcome it was an honor.

This is a truly tragic event. I was fortunate to have met Dave several times over the years at Dayton. He always made this ‘international visitor’ very welcome, and we swapped many ham stories late into the Ohio nights. He was a friendly outgoing and supportive man and I shall misss him.
I didn’t know David, but I’m from Frederick County Maryland. The call rang a bell when I read about it on the local paper. I had hard the whole rescue play out on the scanner and at the time my thoughts were about the professionalism and organization of the emergency services crews in action. After reading the article this morning I thought about how hams and fire rescue service folks often cross paths. I also thought about the circle of life in the ham world. My youngest son just took his Technician test on Saturday and his call was issued today and while he’ll never have the chance to work K3LP, there is a chance that one of the many young hams Dave has mentored and helped get licensed might very well have a QSO with my son one day.

David, K3LP was an old pal from the 1990s when I used to work him over the long & short path 20 meters—-always an outstanding signal from the Maryland area—all of us who knew him so well are really going to miss him–was a great guy & good ham friend—-heartfelt condolences to his family & may the good Lord rest his soul in peace.
