Quality versus Quantity

“Quality and Ham spirit is better than Quantity” wrote Rudy HB9CCL on his QRZ.com page. “No Contests!” said Rudy. I am no contester either. In the weekends I spent more time with the family and I do other social activities. One or two qso’s daily is fine for me. We had a nice qso on 30 meter with CW. I was running 5 watts. My Sand Piper MV-5+3 antenna works very well on 30 meter. With WSPR this morning I was spotted in Australia and USA. Yesterday I worked OM7OM from Slovak Republic with PSK31 on 20 meter.

Did you see Google today? Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (February 22, 1857 – January 1, 1894) was a German physicist who clarified and expanded the electromagnetic theory of light that had been put forth by Maxwell. He was the first to conclusively prove the existence of electromagnetic waves by engineering instruments to transmit and receive radio pulses using experimental procedures that ruled out all other known wireless phenomena.

I used to hate contests and in many respects still do. But now that I’m in my 40′s have 4 and soon 5 kids, I don’t really have time for anything else. So I do understand it. If you are interesting I will rag chew a little, though…

So as long as you are polite while contesting I don’t really see it as a wrong if you try to contact as many stations as possible in a given time. It’s kinda fun if you don’t take it too seriously.

My only complaint is there never seems to be a single weekend w/o a contest running! I suppose that’s what the WARC bands are for tho…

Contesting good mental exercise for the brain. a couple hours is fine & work a few new ones. Its not going ahead of family tho. Never found a better hobby & its still fun ! art

    Hi Fred,
I have youngsters here running around in the weekends. Do the groceries on Saturday, family visits, friends who drop by, etc. So I have seldom the time to do a complete contest. I do not judge those who doing a contest. I just went to 30 or 17 meters, no problem at all. Have fun! 73 Paul

Hi Art, I believe so, but I am a bit lazy… ;-) but sometimes a give some points away, and wonder if they can hear my qrp signal, and often they do while contesting. 73 Paul
