I have owned a Yaesu FT-900 since buying it new in 1994. The radio has been used daily for Air Force MARS nets. About a year ago I added a RIGBLASTER Pro sound card interface and now use the FT-900 for FT8 communications at no more than 50 watts (usually 10 watts since FT8 is a low power mode). This Yaesu FT-900 is bomb proof. It has never failed in 24 years of outstanding service. I have no complaints about my FT-900. I wish it had 6 meters built in, but I bought it knowing that it did not have 6 meters. I am using a TenTec 20 to 6 meter transverter for 6 meters work, but, the transverter is limited to 5 watts input from the FT-900. The Yaesu FT-900 is an outstanding radio. If mine died today I would have gotten my money's worth from the radio, and, I would buy another FT-900 on eBAY. This is one radio Yaesu built right; no flaws, no problems, just a rock solid, long life transceiver.Read full review

I bought mine new, wanting to evaluate the optional Collins mechanical filter in a modern solid-state transceiver. This model was the amateur version of Yaesu's HF marine xcvr of the time, built for user ergonomics and high reliability more than a typical ham's taste for bells and whistles. I decided that the Collins SSB filter skirt selectivity was a bit lacking and added an identical filter in series, using the vacant CW filter socket, simply rewiring the I/O wires for series ssb connections, adding one bridge resistor between the two filters for impedance matching. .Nothing gets through this IF setup unless it is within the passband- I've had several Collins and SBE rigs using Collins filters in my 60+ years of hamming- this is the best implementation of mechanical IF filtering of all, and in general is a fine, fatigue-free receiver. My only realistic design concern has been a lack of roofing filter, a project I set aside because it rarely is needed outside of multi-rig contesting camps. .Read full review
