I bought this particular ham rig because I have interest in things vintage, especially when they work well. This rig has a very discriminating receiver and transmits well while continuing to show the finer points of the hobby of amateur radio. I like the ability it gives me to choose and make decisions about how my transmitted signal is broadcast. Nothing automatic here. To use it you have to know a little about what you are doing. If I were going to teach people about amateur radio I would choose this one for my demonstration rig. The radio has few shortcomings. It combines both old style electronics and the more modern solid state functions and hardware. When I compare it to other rigs the only thing I don't like about it is that others don't make them this way anymore. It's a shame that Kenwood doesn't support this rig anymore. I am in the process of looking at other TS820 rigs for spare parts or to restore for discerning hams who would like to understand more about how things are done behind the wall of modern electronics. This rig is amazing. I appreciate the seller's candor and willingness to help. I think his attitude in this respect is commensurate with the radio's vintage.Read full review
