Kenwood earned the respect of the ham community when they brought out the TR-7400. This was one of the must rugged, heavy-duty radios of it's time and you could run it 24/7 for days on end and not have to be concerned that it might get tired. These were made at a time when there were not umpteen repeaters in a given area that had to have PL tones to keep from keying two or more at one time. The single tone module was optional as well and there are literally NONE to be found anywhere. But, add a Comm Spec external tone module to it and you have a radio that will last a lifetime. Try and dial up your frequency like this one does on a modern radio. Or, your broad-banded 2m mobile that hears everything from DC to blue light including all intermod. This one has a great front end and make a great radio for packet and APRS usage. So, don't count this one out. I have owned two of these for years and both are still in service today.Read full review

This radio will not work on repeaters without adding a tone board for repeater access. Good luck finding one for less than $50.00. To that you can add the price of a Technician to install the tone board. Thats another $60.00. All this for a 40 year old radio that you don't know will work tomorrow. In a 40 year old radio you can just bet that there are capacitors that need to be replaced and then the radio has to be realigned. All at $60.00 / hour. Buy a chinese radio that includes the PL tones for repeater work with a warranty for half the money. You will be WAY WAY WAY ahead in the long run. Radios like people do not live forever !!!

when mike switch is depressed the output meter does not indicate any output-put my own external meter to test this output with no results-all panel lights come on /the transmit light comes on when mike switch is depressed but no signal on output stage-to fix this ser is more expensive than it is worth-probably very good set in its day

Old radio lacking many, many required features of today. Expensive to work on. Received mine DOA. Won't even light up when plugged in -- nothing. Ok, as a first radio, I guess, but why waste money on this when a hand-held with a 10dB gain antenna, like the Ed Fong J-Pole for $34.00, provides more features and power for way, way, way less money than this hope and a prayer promises.
