The only drawback to this little radio is that its 2 Meter only. However for many thats enough. Personally I use them for Winlink / Packet radios - they are great (5 star) for this purpose - there is an "internal" connector one must access, but its clearly marked and easy to do. This feature was REMOVED from the later TM 281, so I always seek out the TM-271A. The radio is built rock solid, and very easy to use / program.

What a GREAT mobile radio. I use this as my base 2 meter radio. It`s compact. It`s large heat sink area helps keep the output transistors cool. It`s very easy to program, only 5 buttons and 2 knobs. The tuning knob acts as the menu select. There are a ton of memories available. It scans, it has auto PL freq. search so if you don`t know the PL tone of the repeater it will find it for you. It is 25 watts output on low, and 60 watts on high. I got mine for $130.00 in brand new condition! You can`t go wrong for a simple to operate 2 meter mobile radio. There are WAY too many things to list as far as ALL the function go. Suffice it to say, this radio does MORE than enough for a compact 2 meter rig.
Easy to use, easy to program, good audio in both transmit and receive. I was surprised by how good the receive audio is, especially given the small speaker size. The menu is mostly intuitive, only needing to look up a few things in the manual to change their settings. Getting on the air after opening the box is about as simple as a modern radio gets.
