A terrific valued radio transceiver for the ham operator interested in CW operations only. It works solely on the use of a crystal for single band operation, or if used by an external VFO to operate the whole CW spectrum of the Novice bands. What's great about it is it's quick tuning for quick on-the-air operation. Hams of all license grades enjoy this rig for it's ability to be ready to operate those special events that are frequently going on almost all the time. This radio has a nice appearance and would be a showstopper in any ham event.

The HW 16 is a wonderful CW rig that covers the lower 250 kHz of the 80, 40, and 15 meter ham bands. The receiver has great selectivity which is around 500 Hz and is great for CW work even during a CW contest when the banda are packed. It is crystal controlled but can be paired with any number of extermal VFO's such as the Heathkit HG 10 VFO. The HW 16 was a first radio for many novice ham operators in the 1970's and early 1980's. It sure brings back many good memories for many of us old ham operators.

This was a great way for many of us to get on the air in the late 60's and early 70;s. Many of us were teens and didn't have a lot of money for the more expensive stuff available then. The performance was very good on 80 and 40 meters and OK on 15 meters. Back then Novices could were not allowed to have a VFO for transmit and so the HW 16 was designed for crystal, or fixed frequency CW transmit. Later the FCC relaxed that rules and we could get the optional HG 10 VFO. I was a member of our high school Ham Radio club and we had the call WB4ZPQ, which was a LONG CW call but we were proud of it any way. We sold doughnuts and saved the money for the HW 16 and later the HG10B VFO. Again, it is a CW ONLY rig for the first 250 KHz of the 80, 40 and 15 meter bands. The performance is very good considering the parts count and general simplicity. The HW 16 is NOT in the class of our modern equipment but performed well enough for us to make lots of enjoyable QSO around the country. If you are a code free licensee and want a nostalgic CW rig to practice CW with, I believe the HW 16 will be fun and not a bad choice. 73 de Glenn WA4AOSRead full review

MANY OF THESE HW-16 RADIOS ARE IN FACT NOT WORKING BUT ARE WELL WORTH REPAIRING IF YOU ARE INCLINED. THE CAPACITORS ARE OFTEN DRYED OUT AND MODS NEED TO BE DONE TO TAME THE OLD TECHNILOGY. JUST BECAUSE THE TUBES AND LIGHTS GLOW THIS DOES NOT MEAN THE RADIO WORKS AS IT IS RARE TO FIND A HW-16 THAT WORKS OUT OF THE BOX.
