I own this radio for few years and I am very pleased with it. IT is solid Chinese brand radio that does its job well for every day use. UVB5 is version that has VFO knob. UVB6 is the same radio, just has LED lamp instead of VFO knob. My preference is VFO knob and that is firs reason I recommend this particular model it to fellow hams. It is easy to program using free and open source application CHIRP and appropriate 2 USD USB to serial programming cable.

It's cheap! It does work (though the reception is only for strong signals) and it's easy to use. I just wanted a simple hand-held to carry around. The scanning is very slow (so I have a Bearcat for that), but once you find a signal, it seems to work quite well. I hear that if you can attach it to a big aerial, it works well - so I'll say that the little stub aerial is probably its weak point. Has CTSS so you can use repeaters.

I personally prefer this radio to the UV-5R, which I also own. I think the receiver is better, and deals with strong signals better. I also am a fan of the knob at the top for changing the memory channel. The radio is still more difficult to manually program than my Yaesu HT's, but at a tenth of the price (I got mine $29.99 delivered!) it is still a great value. Especially when considering that it comes with an earphone and microphone! I will confess that I haven't had good luck using the free CHIRP software and supplied cable on my Windows 7 laptop, although I HAVE been able to program the radio from my Macbook Pro. I still prefer the program and cable from RT Systems, but they are way more than the radio! I have read reviews that say the supplied screws are too short for the belt clip - mine were fine. I am recommending this specific model to young hams that don't have the money for an HT from the big three. For the price, highly recommended!Read full review

These are great little radios so long as you program them from a computer with an aftermarket cable and program. Forget trying to program them from the keypad or figure out the Chinglish directions. Once you have the program installed on your computer and decide what channels you want, all you have to do is hook up the cable to the radio and USB and click write to send the data to the radio. Do this for all additional radios and you're good to go. Basic radio use is common sense from there. Buy a few of these to keep as spares or hand off to your friends and family when you go hiking, camping, or whatever. They hold a charge pretty well but spare batteries for them are cheap, too. They can be programmed for the FRS and GMRS frequencies that those common radios use, as well as MURS and Ham, though Ham channels you should be licensed to use or face hefty fines. Just FYI.Read full review

This radio is like the UV-5R but with a rotary channel changer but with a keypad. This feature is nice when you are working with more than a couple stored channels. The rotary selector replaces the flashlight which I do not miss.
