This is a great linear for the first time user. Easy to tune and plenty of RF power. The tubes are readily available and will not break the bank. The difference in received signal strength between no amplifier and the AL811 is much greater than the difference between the AL811 and a legal limit amp. which would cost 3 to 4 X as much. A further advantage is it only draws 8A of line current at max output. Recommended.

The amplifier suffered considerable damage in transit to my residence. Broken plate coil, rf choke, bypass capacitors, one 811A tube cap broken letting air in tube. The shipping route had more than a half dozen stops from New York to Medford Oregon. The package suffered blunt force trauma that caused the frame to be bent on both sides end to end. I cannot rate the amplifier since it is non-functional at this time. I am hoping I can repair it to working order.

This is a great little amplifier and just a step above the AL-811 which is a great starter amplifier. Getting 800w PEP with 70w drive isn't a problem at all. Just be sure NOT to over drive the amplifier. The 811 tubes will degrade in performance rather quickly if you do and the few extra wats you get aren't worth damaging the tubes. That being said, replacement tubes can be had for as little as 23.99 each although I recommend the RF Parts 811s or OEM Ameritron... You can also use 572B tubes as a replacement will NOT give you any more power out because the HV in remains at 1,700 volts, but they're more durable and will allow you a little more overhead and be more forgiving. They are a direct replacement needing no modification to the amp. Just plug and play, easy peasy... The particular Ameritron 811H I purchased from an EBay seller was born in September 2005 and yes, they are still in production.Read full review

This is my first amplifier and I was a bit intimidated about using it. But it's been pretty easy to tune. I had a QSO with an OM who said my signal went up 2 S units when I switched on the amp. I was only putting out about 300 watts and he is in Colorado and I am in Michigan. I have been pretty please with it's performance.

Had problems with unit from day one. Shipped it back to dealer for repair. High voltage transformer went bad. Told me it will take at least 4 weeks to repair due to ham fest going in Ohio.
